Day 1: Pickup from Kampala and arrive in Mbarara
Arrive early morning and begin the scenic 4-5 hour road trip to Mbarara, a city located in the heart of the Ankole region. The drive is rich in views of rolling hills, valleys, and small villages. Arrive and check into your hotel for lunch and rest. After lunch, visit the Ankole Kingdom Museum in Mbarara. This museum is dedicated to showcasing the cultural heritage and history of the Ankole Kingdom, which dates back to the 16th century. You will learn about the kingdom’s royal family, traditional governance systems, and the sacred cultural artifacts of the region, including the famous long-horned Ankole cattle. The museum also showcases traditional attire, regalia, and ancestral customs. Enjoy a cultural evening with traditional music and dance performances. You will get a chance to interact with locals and enjoy traditional Ugandan dishes such as, “Matoke” (plantains), and “Kachumbari” (tomato and onion salad).

Day 2: Emburara Farm – Immersing in Traditional Life
After breakfast, visit Emburara Farm, an iconic traditional farm located near Mbarara. This farm is run by the local community and provides an authentic experience of rural life in western Uganda. You will have the opportunity to interact with the farmers and learn about traditional agricultural practices, livestock management (especially the famous Ankole cattle), and crop cultivation. Experience firsthand how the Ankole people live, work, and maintain their strong cultural traditions through agriculture Lunch will be served at Emburara Farm, where you can sample freshly prepared traditional meals from the local ingredients. After lunch, engage in hands-on activities like milking cows, weaving baskets, or making traditional crafts. A guide will explain the significance of each activity in Ankole culture. The Ankole people have a strong connection to their livestock, particularly the long-horned cows, which are central to their cultural identity. Head back to your accommodation in Mbarara, relax, and enjoy the serene environment.

Day 3: Community Visit to Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, drive to Lake Mburo National Park (about 45-minute drive). Begin with a community visit to see how local communities around Lake Mburo interact with the park. The local people engage in activities like fishing, farming, and cattle herding. This area is rich in wildlife and also home to many local tribes that have lived around the park for generations. You will experience how the communities have maintained their cultural practices while coexisting with the wildlife. Take a boat ride on Lake Mburo, which offers a chance to see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species, such as pelicans and fish eagles. The lake is surrounded by stunning scenery, and the community’s interaction with the lake is integral to their way of life. Enjoy lunch at a lodge. Visit a nearby village where you’ll have the chance to engage with local people in their homes and learn about their lifestyle. You can participate in traditional cooking, learn to make crafts, or take part in storytelling. These interactions provide deep insights into their customs and daily life. Drive back to Mbarara and enjoy a relaxed evening with dinner at your accommodation.

Day 4: Igongo Cultural Center and Departure
On your final day, head to the Igongo Cultural Center, located just outside of Mbarara. The center is a rich source of knowledge about the history of the region, including the Ankole Kingdom. The museum at Igongo offers exhibits related to the ancient history of Uganda, with a particular focus on the Ankole people. You will also have a chance to visit the craft shops that sell traditional Ankole art, pottery, and clothing. The center’s peaceful setting offers the opportunity to learn about the local people’s traditions, myths, and their relationship with the land. After, enjoy a delicious meal which serves a mix of traditional Ugandan dishes. The setting offers a beautiful view of the surrounding hills and a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy the last moments of your trip. After lunch, start the journey back to Entebbe International Airport. You will pass through beautiful landscapes, filled with lush hills and endless farmland. Arrive at the airport in time for your evening flight back home or to your next destination.
