A standard 2-day package typically covers your gorilla permit (the highest cost), ground transport in a 4×4 vehicle, one night’s accommodation near Bwindi, a professional guide, park entry fees, and your ranger escort on trekking day. Meals are usually included too, though this depends; always confirm before you book.
Day 1: Travel from Kampala, Entebbe, or Kigali to Bwindi
This is your travel day, and you’ll want to start early. From Kampala or Entebbe, the drive to Bwindi takes around 8 to 9 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. We leave by 6 am so you arrive before dark, check in to your lodge, and have a proper dinner and a good night’s sleep before the big day.
If you’re flying in from Kigali, Rwanda, you’re in luck; Bwindi is only about 4 to 5 hours from Kigali by road. Many of our clients actually start their 2-day gorilla trekking tour in Uganda from Kigali because it cuts the drive time almost in half. You can also fly into Bwindi via chartered light aircraft from Entebbe, a journey that takes under an hour and is a beautiful experience in itself.
Day 2: The Gorilla Trek Itself
This is the day you’ll talk about for years. You wake up early, have a good breakfast, and head to the park headquarters for a 7:30 am briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. They’ll tell you which gorilla family you’ve been assigned to, explain the rules, no flash photography, stay 7 metres away, no eating in front of the gorillas, and introduce your ranger team.
Then you enter the forest. The trek can take anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. When you find them, you get exactly one hour with the family. Silverbacks, mothers nursing babies, juveniles playing in the trees, it’s something that hits you right in the chest. After your hour is up, you hike back out, celebrate with lunch at your lodge, and begin the return journey.
