What Does a 2 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda Safari Include?
A 2-day gorilla trekking Uganda safari is built around one core experience, your gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. But there’s a full day of travel on either side of it, and how you plan that travel makes all the difference.
A standard 2-day package typically covers your gorilla permit (the highest cost), ground transport in a 4×4 vehicle, one night’s accommodation near Bwindi, a professional guide, park entry fees, and your ranger escort on trekking day. Meals are usually included too, though this depends; always confirm before you book.
Day 1: Travel from Kampala, Entebbe, or Kigali to Bwindi
This is your travel day, and you’ll want to start early. From Kampala or Entebbe, the drive to Bwindi takes around 8 to 9 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. We leave by 6 am so you arrive before dark, check in to your lodge, and have a proper dinner and a good night’s sleep before the big day.
If you’re flying in from Kigali, Rwanda, you’re in luck; Bwindi is only about 4 to 5 hours from Kigali by road. Many of our clients actually start their 2-day gorilla trekking tour in Uganda from Kigali because it cuts the drive time almost in half. You can also fly into Bwindi via chartered light aircraft from Entebbe, a journey that takes under an hour and is a beautiful experience in itself.
Day 2: The Gorilla Trek Itself
This is the day you’ll talk about for years. You wake up early, have a good breakfast, and head to the park headquarters for a 7:30 am briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. They’ll tell you which gorilla family you’ve been assigned to, explain the rules, no flash photography, stay 7 metres away, no eating in front of the gorillas, and introduce your ranger team.
Then you enter the forest. The trek can take anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. When you find them, you get exactly one hour with the family. Silverbacks, mothers nursing babies, juveniles playing in the trees, it’s something that hits you right in the chest. After your hour is up, you hike back out, celebrate with lunch at your lodge, and begin the return journey.
How Much Does a 2 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda Tour Cost?
The Uganda Gorilla Permit- $800 Per Person
This is the highest fixed cost, and there’s no way around it. Uganda Wildlife Authority sets the gorilla permit at $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents of East Africa, and a lower local rate for Ugandan citizens. This fee covers your one hour with a habituated gorilla family, your ranger escort throughout the trek, and park entry on trekking day.
Book your permit as early as possible, 3 to 6 months in advance for peak season (June–September and December–February). We handle permit bookings directly with UWA for all our clients, which means no middlemen and no extra fees.

Best Starting Points for Your 2 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda Tour
Starting from Kampala or Entebbe
This is the classic route. You leave early morning in a 4×4, drive through Mbarara, and arrive at Bwindi by late afternoon. It’s a long but rewarding day in the car; the scenery through southwestern Uganda, with rolling hills, tea plantations, and crater lakes, is genuinely beautiful.
Starting from Kigali, Rwanda
This is the smarter option for travelers already in Rwanda or flying into Kigali. The drive from Kigali to Bwindi is roughly 4–5 hours, cutting your travel time significantly. We run 2-day gorilla trekking Uganda tours starting from Kigali regularly- seamless cross-border logistics, all handled by our team.
Which Sector of Bwindi Is Best for a 2 Day Gorilla Trek?
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four trekking sectors, each with a different character. For a 2-day trip, your sector choice affects your drive time, terrain difficulty, and accommodation options, so it’s worth understanding each one before you decide.
Buhoma – Best for First-Timers
Buhoma is the original and most established gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi. It has well-maintained trails, the widest range of accommodation nearby, and gorilla families that have been habituated to visitors for many years. The terrain here is moderate rather than extremely steep, which makes it a great starting point for travelers who are not experienced hikers. The infrastructure around Buhoma is the best developed in the park, with lodges ranging from budget guesthouses to comfortable mid-range options.
Rushaga – Best for Permit Availability and Variety
Rushaga, in the southern part of Bwindi, has the highest number of habituated gorilla families of all four sectors. This means it’s your best bet during peak season when other sectors sell out fast. Rushaga is also the only sector that offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, a full-day encounter with a semi-habituated family for those who want to go beyond the standard one-hour visit. Accommodation in Rushaga ranges from simple community guesthouses to solid mid-range lodges.
Nkuringo – Best for the Adventurous Traveler
Nkuringo offers the most dramatic gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi. The hiking here is genuinely challenging, steep descents and ascents through very dense forest, but the rewards are spectacular. On clear days, you can see across into the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda from the ridgelines. The gorilla families in this sector roam in wilder, more remote terrain, which makes the experience feel more raw and adventurous. We recommend Nkuringo for physically fit travelers who want something beyond the standard route.
Ruhija – Best for a Quiet, High-Altitude Experience
Ruhija sits at the highest altitude of the four sectors, giving it a cooler climate and a distinct forest atmosphere. It’s a favourite among birdwatchers because the high-altitude vegetation is home to rare species found nowhere else in Bwindi. The sector sees fewer visitors than Buhoma or Rushaga, meaning your gorilla encounter here is quieter and more intimate. The trek difficulty in Ruhija is moderate to challenging, and the sector has a small but good selection of lodges
What to Pack for Your 2 Day Uganda Gorilla Trek
You don’t need much, but you need the right things. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers; the forest has stinging nettles and biting insects. Bring sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. Pack a light rain jacket because Bwindi lives up to its name as a rainforest. Garden gloves help on steep, vegetation-heavy sections. Carry 2 litres of water and energy snacks. And leave your phone ringer off- silence in the forest is part of the magic.
Is 2 Days Enough for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
Yes, 2 days is enough to have a complete gorilla trekking experience. Day one is travel and rest, day two is your full trek. You won’t have time to explore other Ugandan parks, but the gorilla encounter itself is whole and powerful. Many travelers who do the 2-day trip return to Uganda for a longer safari specifically because that first experience left them wanting more.
