Day 1: Departure
Our birdwatching adventure begins with a pick-up in Kampala. Enjoy a scenic drive to Mabamba Swamp, located near Lake Victoria. Along the way, enjoy the rural landscapes and scenic views of the Ugandan countryside. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by your local guide who is an expert in bird identification and the area’s ecology. You will be briefed about the tour, and your guide will give you an overview of the birds you may encounter, including the sought-after Shoebill Stork, African Jacana, Kingfishers, and more. Embark on a traditional canoe or dugout boat ride through the swamp, with your guide steering and pointing out the key bird species along the way. The peaceful waters are fringed by thick papyrus, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching. Look out for Shoebill Storks standing motionless, waiting for prey, and Malachite Kingfishers darting above the water. After the boat ride, you’ll have the option to take a short hike through the swamp’s trails, exploring other sections of the wetland. This is where you’ll have the opportunity to see additional species like Papyrus Gonolek, African Fish Eagles, and Blue-headed Coucals. Your guide will take time to explain the importance of the swamp’s ecosystem and its role in the survival of these diverse bird species. Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature, where you can relax and soak in the serenity of the wetland environment. Fresh local dishes will be provided, such as grilled fish, fruits, sandwiches, and a cold drink. After lunch, you will have the chance to continue birdwatching, either from the boat or on foot. Your guide will ensure you spot both the rare and common species in the area. This is a great time to take photos and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the swamp, where you may also encounter other wildlife like otters and waterbucks. After a fulfilling birdwatching experience, hop back into the boat for one last leisurely ride through the swamp before heading back to the dock. With binoculars full of bird sightings and memories of a tranquil swamp experience, begin your drive back to Kampala. Enjoy a relaxing ride while reflecting on the day’s adventure. Your tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe International Airport.
